Course Details
Francesca Marguerite Maximé is a Haitian-Dominican Italian-American poet/author in Brooklyn, New York. Maximé offers services to help address trauma, process grief, reduce stress, and more, including working with organizations and communities on addressing structural, organization and social/cultural trauma. She is the 2019 recipient of the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies Outstanding Student Advocacy & Service Award. She has been mentored in mindfulness meditation practices by celebrated author and clinical psychologist Jack Kornfield, Ph.D and has also been a mindfulness student of clinical psychologist and internationally known teacher Tara Brach, Ph.D. Maximé’s work emphasizes issues pertaining to organizational, social and cultural trauma as well as gender and racial equity and equality.
Many structures in our culture have been systemized for decades and have racism cooked into them. If we want to help our clients create change, we first have to invite them to look inward at themselves. Using the tool mindfulness we will demonstrate how to teach a client to examine different parts of themselves, their bodily reactions, and any trauma that lies in their past.
Many clients associate racism with an individual bad actor. As long as they don’t see themselves as racist, then they get to be the ‘good’ people. This belief prevents our clients from actually seeing the systems in our culture that have influenced their brains and patterns. In reality, our clients are inheritors of systems created long before birth. In this module, we will learn how to use mindfulness to help our clients cultivate an awareness of these deeply ingrained systems and recognize the effects on their everyday lives.
As clinicians, we are all familiar with various models of human development such as those formulated by famous psychologists Freud, Erikson, and Piaget. In this module, we will turn our attention to the Summary Stages of Racial Identity Development created by Dr. Janet Helms. We will discuss all six stages through the framework of what a white person would experience so that we can better understand where our client’s are in their racial identity development.
Allies are necessary in the fight against racism. In the past, many allies had good intentions but were not able to effectively help the black community. The important question here is, who were they trying to help? In this module, we will examine how to teach our client’s to be present and attuned to their own impulses to help. This approach is important because it can lead them to more appropriate and effective directions of service, as well as allow them to be more compassionate toward others.
Grief is often seen as somber, but there are ways that we can support our clients that are also celebratory. As we use mindfulness to shift our client’s perspective, we can show them how to utilize grief as a way to create something new in their life and local community.
At the end of this module you will be able to:
- Identify the difference in client behavior between ‘antiracist’ and ‘non-racist’
- Explain the effects of teaching mindfulness to our clients
- Analyze your client’s Social location and positionality to whiteness
At the end of this module you will be able to:
- Discuss how belonging and interdependence sustain our communities and identify the interdependence and communities our client’s belong to
- Describe Polyvagal Theory and the nervous system in relation to mindfulness used with clients
- List Cultural Somatics that can exist in our client’s daily life
At the end of this module you will be able to:
- Explain each stage of the White Racial Identity Model: Contact, Disintegration, Reintegration, Pseudo Independence, Immersion/Emersion, Autonomy
- Identify what stage of the White Racial Identity Model your client is in
- Discuss with your clients how individuals can be both white and antiracist at the same time
At the end of this module you will be able to:
- Explain to our client’s what it means to be ‘for’ and ‘with’ in anti-racism and what it means to be a white savior
- Explain the core mindfulness principle that will create a more collaborative partnership between you and your client
- Discuss how to bring up race in session in a way that maintains a sense of safety for your clients
At the end of this module you will be able to:
- Differentiate between the indicators of grief and shame in your client sessions
- Discuss how a client can share their grief work with others
- Explain the idea of ‘Spiritual Bypassing’ and how to identify it with your client
