Transforming Relational Trauma Using Sociometrics and Psychodrama
Adult children of relational trauma may carry relational pain and ruptures from their childhood that repeat themselves in adulthood. Trauma is both a mind and body experience so that healing trauma also needs to somehow allow the body and senses to participate in relational repair. But because those who have experienced relational trauma can be cautious in connecting, experiential work needs to feel welcoming, safe and structured and easy to enter into.
Psychodrama provides an embodied approach to deal directly with internalized relationships. Sociometrics offer psychoeducational, experiential relational repair in groups. Both access neuroception, introception, extroception and propriioception, allowing both the mind and body to be fully integrated into the healing process. In this experiential workshop, we’ll look at how “doubling” and “role reversal”, two core techniques of psychodrama, can be used in most forms of therapy, adding an experiential/embodied component to existing modalities.
We’ll learn how to work with attachment issues that are a part of cPTSD experientially and through role play and sociometrics. Through role play, clients can talk to themselves and others from a past, present, or future point in time, and through sociometrics they can experience and practice new relational behaviors in the here and now.
Sociometrics are a user-friendly way to engage and bond groups; clients are on their feet, grounded in the room, and connecting with each other. Sociometrics activate the social engagement system in service of healing, they give participants practice in tuning in on themselves and connecting in new, more satisfying ways with others. They are psychoeducational, and they incorporate the research that needs to be taught in recovering from cPTSD.
Sociometrics are processes that are easy to learn, empower clients to become stakeholders in their own recovery, and build the skills of emotional literacy, intelligence, and resilience. They take the guesswork out of incorporating experiential work into programming and practice.
Because trauma is stored in the body, it is important that embodiment is a part of any trauma resolution. Sociometrics help clients to “warm up” to simple, targeted role plays that emerge naturally through the experiential process and are contained and manageable to direct. We’ll explore a focused use of trauma-informed role play, that helps clients to move from a state of dysregulation to self and co-regulation. In combination, sociometrics and role play offer an approach to healing relational trauma, restoring spontaneity, and building resilience.

Course Agenda
Live Online Zoom Session 1: Psychodrama Basics: History, Theory and Techniques – Wednesday, January 17th, 2024 – 8-9:30am PST/11am-12:30pm EST – 1.5 hours – 1.5 CEs
Overview: In psychodrama, we “talk to not about“. By reconstructing a relational dynamic, long-buried or denied emotions, sensations and imagery can be activated to create a fuller picture of the role interactions that shaped us. JL Moreno created psychodrama in turn of the century Vienna, it is the first form of embodied therapy. Psychodrama has 7 basic elements and a set of specific techniques that once understood, allow clinicians to manage role play in a contained manner.
Two of those techniques, doubling and role reversal, can become portable in a way that can deepen a client’s experience of, for example, talk therapy. Doubling connects us with our inner being, with those inner parts that may be frozen, hidden or even dreamed of. Role reversal gives clients a visceral experience of standing in the shoes of the “other” building empathy, insight, flexibility, and strength. Doubling and role reversal can be incorporated into most forms of therapy including, one-to-one, couples, IFS, EMDR, etc……they can transform and enhance the way your clients experience themselves in relationship to their own, inner parts and other people. Because psychodrama and sociometry are so vast in their potential applications, therapists can feel ill-equipped to use them.
Session Agenda:
- A Brief History of Psychodrama 20 min

- The Basic Techniques within a Psychodrama 10 min
- Video demo of a role play 10 min

- Group demo/practice in breakout rooms in doubling and role reversal 20 min
- How classical psychodrama is inherently trauma-informed
- Q&A 15 min
Overview: Through the experiential, embodied approaches of psychodrama and sociometrics, these patterns can emerge and be made conscious. Sociometrics are embodied, research-based experiential processes that are psycho-educational.They help to take the guesswork out of incorporating psychodrama and sociometry into treatment.Sociometrics feel welcoming and safe, clients are out of their seats, on their feel, grounded in the room, and engaging with each other. They are research-based experiential processes that are psycho-educational and help clients move organically from states of dysregulation to co-regulation.Floor Checks are Dr. Dayton’s core sociometric process, they incorporate research-based education that literally pulls dry lecture material off of chalkboards and turns it into spontaneous and alive case studies that both teach and heal.
Created by Dr. Dayton to fit easily into treatment, outpatient programs, clinics, and one-to-one settings, floor checks and sociometrics such as timelines and targeted social atoms, help to take the guesswork out of incorporating psychodrama and sociometry into treatment. And we’ll learn how to use The Trauma Timeline to trace and work with developmental trauma.

- Q&A on Floor Checks, Spectrograms 20 min
Overview: Timelines allow clients who have experienced relational trauma to understand when and where that may have occurred. Timelines can be used as a worksheet and springboard for sharing or an embodied role play in which a client can talk to themselves at any point along their developmental continuum or significant relationships as well. The Attachment Timeline, The Trauma Timeline, and The Resilience Timeline are paper and pencil activities that can be moved into an experiential group or individual action/role play. They help clients to gain a sense of the who, when, and where involved in attachment trauma as well as those developmental experiences that helped them to develop strength and resilience. Timelines help clients to place experiences that they may have pushed out of consciousness into the overall framework of their lives and to identify reenactment patterns attachment/developmental issues.

- Breakdown of types of timelines and what they each are good for 10 min
- Guide group through timeline process 10 min
- Invite sharing in the demo group 10 min

- Q&A around the timelines and their applications 15 – 20 min
Overview: The Social Atom: Diagramming the Personal Network
Diagramming the social atom provides a treatment map of the network of relationships in a client’s life at any point along the developmental continuum. It can reflect relational constellations from the past, present or oven a desired or feared future. It offers clinicians and clients alike a treatment plan that can be used as a worksheet or be made embodied through the empty chair, sculpturing or role play. The social atom is essentially a diagram of any aspect, family or friends of a person’s network. It begins on paper and can then be put into role plays, sculptures or full psychodramas. It’s a cornerstone of psychodrama, sociometry and group psychotherapy. In this experiential workshop, we’ll look at these different possibilities for social atoms and learn how to draw, share and move one into role play.

- Guide group through social atom process 10 min
- Invite sharing in the demo group 15 min
- Go to breakout rooms and continue to share 20 min
- Q&A around the timelines and their applications 20 min
Overview: While loss is a natural part of life, the types of losses we encounter through addiction, relational trauma, and adverse childhood experiences can feel hidden, and unworthy of further attention. Some losses are clear, society recognizes them as significant and we have rituals to mourn them. We feel free to ask for support and more often, support comes our way without our even having to ask. But the kinds of losses that are a part of addiction and dysfunction, all too often remain disenfranchised. These losses can lack visibility and clarity, they are hidden and oftentimes remain unseen or misread by others. And there can be confusion as to exactly who or what has been lost or whether there is a loss at all. However, not only do they hurt as much, the very fact that they remain buried, unrecognized and unsupported, can complicate mourning and block our process of grieving. These kinds of losses deserve respect, they need our compassion and care. Grieving these kinds of losses can bring about change on the inside that leads to change on the outside. Mourning a loss of a connection to self, to someone significant, to a period of life, to addiction and/or dysfunction.
