This program has limited approval for DISTANCE LEARNING CEs. PLEASE CLICK ON THE SPECIFIC CE INFORMATION LINK BELOW FOR FULL PROFESSION/STATE DETAILS.
Linda Thai LMSW(she, her) is a trauma therapist who specializes in cutting-edge brain and body-based modalities for the healing of complex developmental trauma. As an educator and consultant, she is gifted with the capacity to contextualize, synthesize, and communicate complex and nuanced issues pertaining to the impact of oppressive systems upon identity, mental health and wellbeing, and the invisibilized wounds of racial trauma. Linda is passionate about breaking the cycle of historical and intergenerational trauma at the individual and community levels and deeply believes in the healing power of coming together in community to grieve.
Born in Vietnam, raised in Australia, and now living in Alaska, Linda is a former child refugee who is not only redefining what it means to be Vietnamese, to be Australian, and to be a United States-ian....she is redefining what it means to be wounded and whole and a healer.
Untangling the nervous system is key to understanding your client’s stress responses. Instead of looking at it like a tangled ball of yarn, you can approach it as a source of incredible information and clues. In Befriending the Nervous System: Strategies for Trauma, Sensory Processing, and Developmental Wounds, you’ll learn to observe behavioral responses, track the nervous system, and interpret sensory systems to create a holistic picture of your client’s trauma landscape. Then you can develop an integrated approach using somatics, parts work, neurobiology, and attachment theory to facilitate unique trauma healing.
Module 1:
After this session, participants will develop a solid understanding of the impact of traumatic stress on the nervous system and the adaptations that then arise in order to prevent further re-traumatization. By understanding the neurobiological mechanisms associated with acute and chronic states of perceived overwhelming distress, we can depathologize and destigmatize the symptoms and experiences of our clients, as well as reframe the ways in which nervous system dysregulation may be expressing as mental health symptoms.
Module 2:
After this session, participants will develop a solid understanding of the three main branches of the autonomic nervous system, in such a way that normalizes and contextualizes the nervous systems of our clients. By developing an understanding the intersection of trauma responses, parts work and Structural Dissociation of the Personality Theory, clinicians will be more effective in offering bottom-up resourcing for traumatized clients.
Module 3:
After this session, participants will develop a working knowledge of sensory differences in such a way that normalizes the experiences and sensory preferences of our clients. By developing an understanding the intersection of trauma responses, sensory processing differences and preferences, and innate differences in neuro-processing, clinicians will be more effective in offering bottom-up resourcing for traumatized clients.
Module 4:
After this session, participants will develop a working knowledge of the interrelational dynamics that emerge in the therapeutic relationship as a result of how each person’s unique history and experiences has shaped their nervous systems and their relational strategies. By developing this understanding at the nervous system level, therapists will be able to be more effective in noticing, naming, and navigating transference and countertransference.
Module 5:
After this session, participants will develop a knowledge base around the conditions that give rise to family-of-origin dysfunction and how children within those family systems adapt, in such a way that practitioners can develop skills around ambiguous grief and the missing experiences of development.

Befriending the Nervous System:
Strategies for Trauma, Sensory Processing, and Developmental Wounds
Learning Objectives
Session 1 Learning Objectives
• Identify eight physiological responses to perceived overwhelming distress
• Integrate one effective client-friendly metaphor to illustrate how trauma triggers become encoded into the brain
• Identify at least eight DSM diagnoses that correlate with various expressions of autonomic nervous system dysregulation
Session 2 Learning Objectives
• Identify the three main branches of the autonomic nervous system
• Learn six techniques to complete the stress response cycle
• Identify the three blended autonomic nervous system states
• Identify the four common autonomic nervous system loops
Session 3 Learning Objectives
• Identify the five main sensory systems and the three hidden sensory systems
