Juliane Taylor Shore, LPC, LMFT, SEP holds an MA from St. Edward’s University in Counseling and is the founder and clinical director of IPNB Psychotherapy of Austin, where she trains and supervises therapists. She specializes in applying Interpersonal Neurobiology to the healing of trauma and the creation of relational health with clients she sees. She uses her knowledge of the brain and the implicit mind to go decisively to the root of the issue with gentleness and depth.
Jules has given workshops on a variety of subjects, including the ongoing training of integration of Polyvagal Theory Memory Reconsolidation and Interpersonal Neurobiology for counselors, educators, and supervisors. She has been a specialist in trauma recovery and couples counseling for over 13 years and loves to work experientially because that is how to meet and invite shifts in the implicit mind. She wants to help people find the love, connection, and grace they have always longed for, both in themselves and with each other.
In addition to seeing therapists for consultation and teaching, Jules offers intensives for couples and individuals who come from all over to do in-depth work in a brief format.
Neurobiology of Trauma
Understanding how trauma affects the brain is essential if you want to be well-versed in how to make sense of and guide clients through the healing of trauma symptoms. In this month's TW Circle, you will develop an understanding of how different systems in the brain respond when there has been a trauma. You will leave being able to make more sense of what you are seeing in your sessions and gain some ideas for how to respond to those symptoms in ways that support healing.

Course Agenda
Live Online Zoom Session 1: Understanding What Happens to the Brain During Trauma - Friday, December 8th, 2023 – 9-10:30am PST/12-1:30pm EST – 1.5 hours - 1.5 CEs
Overview: The response to trauma within the brain has been well documented. In this session, we will focus on what happens in the brain and nervous system during a traumatic event and in ongoing traumatic events. Clinicians will learn how a person's brain functions during a fear response to a trauma and how the responses in the nervous system differ when facing ongoing threat and stress versus time-limited threat and stress. This will enable clinicians to normalize responses for their clients. Clinicians will also walk away with interventions that support the nervous system that they can use with clients who are experiencing ongoing stress and threat or are perceiving ongoing threat and stress due to past traumatic experiences.
Session Content:
- Define trauma and understand the relationship between prefrontal cortex-regulated states and fear circuitry (10 min)
- Name and describe the defensive response cycle (10 min)
- Describe the role of the amygdala and hippocampus during a trauma (10 min)
- Answer Questions from the participants (15 min)
- Describe the HPA axis in both short-term and ongoing stress responses (15 min)
- Describe physiological presentations of those responses (5 min)
- Detail behaviors that complete a stress response cycle (10 min)
- Answer questions from participants (15 min)
Live Online Zoom Session 2: The Neurobiology of Post Traumatic Stress Responses - Friday, December 15th, 2023 – 9-10:30am PST/12-1:30pm EST – 1.5 hours - 1.5 CEs
Overview: The brain and nervous system have well-documented responses to trauma after a traumatic event is over. When working with trauma it can be helpful to understand how the brain adapts to overwhelm that is ongoing. This session will provide an overview of the neurobiology of the two most common types of trauma responses. The session will also provide guidance on what this means in terms of intervention for clinicians who see clients who have survived trauma. The session will also look at common differences in long-term adaptations between those who experienced shock trauma versus emotional trauma vs both.
Session Content:
- Understand two different common adaptations to a traumatic experience and the neurobiology of those adaptations (15 min)
- Delineate the clinical applicability of this knowledge (15 min)
- Answer questions from participants (15 min)
- Outline differences in the brain between shock trauma, emotional trauma and complex trauma adaptations (15 min)
- Delineate the clinical applicability of this knowledge (15 min)
- Answer questions from participants (15 min)
