Trauma and the Body
Using a mindfulness-based approach, participants will be introduced to understanding ‘trauma’ not as an event but as dysregulated autonomic arousal, overwhelming emotions and sensations, intrusive images and memories, impulsive acting out, numbing and disconnection. In this presentation, participants will learn how to assess and make sense of trauma-based somatic symptoms and how to integrate neurobiologically informed treatment techniques into traditional talking therapies.

Course Agenda
Live Online Zoom Session 1: Effects of Traumatic Experience on the Body and Nervous System
– Friday, February 2nd, 2024 – 11am-12:30pm PST/2-3:30pm EST – 1.5 hours – 1.5 CEs
Overview: This session explores trauma and its effects on the body, focusing on somatic interventions for complex trauma. We will discuss how extreme stress can disrupt memory processing, leaving sensory elements of the experience unattached. Implicit memories, encoded without words, primarily consist of bodily and emotional feelings detached from the event. We’ll learn how mindfulness and curiosity are used to awaken the prefrontal cortex and facilitate frontal lobe activity and about treatments that emphasize collaborative exploration of the client’s experience with curiosity and playfulness.
Session Content:
- Describe the autonomic, cognitive, affective and somatic effects of traumatic experience (20 minutes)
- Triggers and triggering: how trauma becomes PTSD (15 minutes)
- Mindfulness-based techniques challenge unresolved trauma-related responses (20 minutes)
- Introduction to Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, a mindfulness-based treatment (15 minutes)
- Helping clients learn to observe their somatic, emotional and cognitive responses (20 minutes)
– Friday, February 16th, 2024 – 11am-12:30pm PST/2-3:30pm EST – 1.5 hours – 1.5 CEs
Overview: This session explores the concept of neuroception, which involves the brain’s instinctive evaluation of danger and subsequent defensive responses. We’ll discuss different systems of response, such as the ventral vagal system for safety and the sympathetic arousal system for danger. Somatic interventions will be emphasized, including techniques to expand the client’s “Window of Tolerance” and experiment with somatic resources for traumatic reactions. Social engagement is highlighted as crucial for healing trauma, and the therapist’s role in regulating affect through subtle cues will be discussed. Finally, we will cover strategies for therapists to enhance treatment using their own bodies, emphasizing playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy.
Session Content:
- Expanding the Window of Tolerance and stabilizing traumatized clients (20 minutes)
- Helping clients to recognize the felt experience of being triggered (15 minutes)
- Somatic resources to regulate autonomic and emotional dysregulation (20 minutes)
- Mobilizing and immobilizing defensive responses (20 minutes)
- Helping clients overcome unhealthy patterns of response (15 minutes)
