Juliane Taylor Shore, LPC, LMFT, SEP
Juliane Taylor Shore, LPC, LMFT, SEP (AKA Jules) is a therapist and trainer of therapists in Austin, Texas. She specializes in applying Interpersonal Neurobiology to the healing of trauma and the creation of relational health with clients she sees. She uses her knowledge of the brain and the implicit mind to go decisively to the root of the issue with gentleness and depth.
Jules has been a specialist in trauma recovery and in couples counseling for 12 years and loves to work experientially because that is how to invite shifts in the implicit mind. She wants to help people find the love, connection, and grace they have always longed for, both in themselves and with each other.
In addition to seeing therapists for consultation and teaching, Jules offers intensives for couples and for individuals who come from all over to do in-depth work in a brief format.
Trauma and Memory
One of the biggest difficulties with healing from trauma is responding to how the brain stores memory. In this month’s Trauma Wisdom Circle, we will dive deeply into understanding memory, how traumatic memory is stored and accessed differently, and how memory has evolved to heal. You will leave this month’s training with the information you need to help clients make sense of their experience and with the neurobiological foundations you will need to identify clinical skills that work across any therapy modality you encounter.
Educational Goals
The clinician will have an increased understanding of how memory is integrated with every moment of a client's lived experience. They can use this understanding to feel stable when facing the memories that are common during traumatic recall and to help clients normalize their experiences and reduce shame. They will also be able to identify specific interventions in a variety of modalities that support the reconsolidation process.

Course Agenda
Live Online Zoom Session 1: Understanding Memory and How Trauma Impacts Memory - Friday, January 12th, 2024 – 9-10:30am PST/12-1:30pm EST – 1.5 hours - 1.5 CEs
Overview: In this session, the clinician will learn about different types of memory and learn how memory storage and retrieval shifts due to changes that occur in the brain when a person perceives a significant threat. Clinicians will leave this session understanding explicit and implicit memory and the differences between them. Participants will be able to describe the role of the hippocampus in episodic memory formation and name why hippocampal activation can be helpful when supporting a client in integrating and processing traumatic experiences. The clinician will be able to describe how memory is processed in the prefrontal cortex and how this can be related to traumatic memory and learnings as well as other types of learning and memory.
Session Content:
- Describe implicit and explicit memory systems and highlight differences in both memory creation and retrieval between the two systems (15 min)
- Describe memory retrieval and the prefrontal cortex processing of memory (15 min)
- Answer Participant Questions (15 min)
- Define hippocampal role in episodic memory production and describe what occurs to hippocampal function during a traumatic event (15 min)
- Describe research findings on hippocampal involvement in post traumatic stress integration, resolution and recovery (10 min)
- Give examples of sharing psychoeducation to clients on memory formation and retrieval in times of regular activation and traumatic activation (5 min)
- Answer Participant Questions (15 min)
Live Online Zoom Session 2: How Implicit Memory Changes - Friday, January 26th, 2024 – 9-10:30am PST/12-1:30pm EST – 1.5 hours - 1.5 CEs
Overview: In this session, the clinician will learn about the neuroscience of memory consolidation and memory reconsolidation. The clinician will be able to both list and describe the three essential elements that must be simultaneously present to support the reconsolidation process therapeutically. The clinician will see tape of a session in which a reconsolidation occurred so that they can begin to understand in an embodied way how to support this natural phenomenon within therapeutic contexts. The clinician will also leave with an understanding of potential complexities in the reconsolidation process.
Session Content:
- Describe memory consolidation and memory reconsolidation (10 min)
- Delineate the three essential elements needed for a reconsolidation to occur (15 min)
- Questions from participants (15 min)
- Exploring potential complexities as we support the phenomenon of reconsolidation (10 min)
- Tape of a reconsolidation (18 min)
- Questions from participants (15 min)
