Course Details
AKILAH RILEY-RICHARDSON, MSW, CCTP is a published researcher, Relational Healing Facilitator, couples
therapist and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She has been in clinical practice for sixteen years and has experience working with couples and persons practicing consensual non-monogamy, both in the Caribbean and internationally. Akilah also specializes in work with sexual minorities and racial minorities. As an educator and facilitator, she has provided consultancy services to organizations such as NASTAD (National Alliance for State and Territorial AIDS Directors), the Relational Life Institute, I-TECH (International Training and Education Center for Health) and CVC (Caribbean Vulnerable Communities). She has presented in various spaces including the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium and the Black Mental Health Symposium. She has been a Social Work Educator at the University of the Southern Caribbean since 2012. She is the founder of the BIPOC Relational Healing Institute and creator of the P.R.I.D.E model.
SARAH BURGAMY, PSYD is the founder of a private practice in Denver, Colorado, PhoenixRISE, with
specialty offerings in identity development, sexual minority competency as well as transgender and gender diverse identities in adults, adolescents, and children. Dr. Burgamy received her doctorate degree from the University of Denver, Graduate School of Professional Psychology, in Clinical Psychology, with an emphasis on child and adolescent development.
Dr. Burgamy has provided presentations and trainings in diverse professional settings, both on a local and national level in educational settings from preschools to colleges and universities, in healthcare settings such as the Colorado Children’s Hospital, the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Denver Health, and the Department of Veterans Affairs in New Haven, CT, as well as in the public and private community and professional sectors for organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), and Google. Dr. Burgamy has been interviewed or featured in media coverage in The Denver Post series, “Transgender in Colorado,” and on the Denver-based daytime program, “The Everyday Show” addressing the phenomenon of gender identity and expression in children.
Dr. Burgamy currently serves as a representative of the Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity (Division 44) to the American Psychological Association (APA) Council of Representatives (2022-2024) and previously served as a member, and 2019 chair, of the APA Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity (2017-2019). She is a Past-President of Colorado Psychological Association (CPA) and has previously served as the diversity division chair of CPA – Society for the Advancement of Multiculturalism and Diversity (SAMD). Dr. Burgamy has been a member of the Board of Directors for Urban Peak, a non-profit organization in Colorado serving youth experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless, since 2008, and joined the Board of Trustees at Stanley British Primary School in Denver, Colorado in 2019. Dr. Burgamy currently serves on the Advisory Committee for the Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology at APA.

Live Session 1: Systemic Trauma as Developmental Trauma: How to Treat Systemic Harm in Therapy with Akilah Riley-Richardson,MSW, CCTP
Systemic trauma impacts human development in unique ways, but this is often overlooked in individual therapy. As clinicians, it is our duty to create liberatory contexts that will unearth its impact and provide clients with ways of addressing this. In this session, we will take a deeper look at the neurobiological and developmental effects of systemic trauma and ways that we can treat it.
Education Goals:At the end of this session, participants will have a deeper understanding of the ways in which systemic trauma affects individuals and the creative ways that they can use to support healing of this trauma. Their clinical skills will be deepened and they will have a clearer understanding of both the behavioural and neurobiological impact of this type of trauma.
Live Session 2: “Help! My Cape is WAY too Tight!”: Navigating the Complexity of LGBTQ+ Identities in Helping Professions with Sarah Burgamy, Psy.D.
The stressors of helping professions at once share a common experience of depletion, secondary/vicarious traumas, and risk of burnout. However, what is unique or possibly embellishing about sexual orientation and/or gender diverse personal identities in this same work?
Education Goals:This session will focus on overall professional growth. As healthcare workers are rarely directly trained in self-care/self-nurturance/self-monitoring techniques in training programs, many of us are uniquely vulnerable to secondary or vicarious trauma, not only due to the difficult work and, at times, duress of our clients, but also in relationship to our unique identity factors. Specifically, this session will focus on those helpers and healers who, themselves, embody identities within and/or across the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Overview: Most of us are aware of the obvious stressors and fatigue associated with working in helping health professions. What often goes undetected or unrecognized is how our unique identity factors may also contribute to helper fatigue, direct and vicarious trauma, and burnout. We will explore how sexual orientation and gender diverse identities (LGBTQ+), while at once personal and, at times, invisible unless disclosed, may also be a complex part of the professional and systemic healthcare landscape. When you’re a healthcare “superhero”, how do you make sure to loosen that cape in times of great stress?
Session Content:
- What is stress? What is burnout? How do these relate to the unique cultural context of LGBTQ+ identities (25 minutes)
- What identities are we really talking about… Sexual orientation? Gender identity? Both? (15 minutes)
- How do these identity factors relate to the greater social and cultural context? (10 minutes)
- What are mediating variables of burnout? What stress reduction strategies are particularly related to LGBTQ+ identities? (15 minutes)
- Identifying systems level intervention in support of LGBTQ+ healthcare workers to mitigate direct trauma, vicarious trauma, and/or burnout (15 minutes)
- Reflection with participants and Q&A (10 minutes)

This program offers limited Live CEs/Contact Hours.
Continuing education credit/Contact hours are awarded on a per-session basis, with full attendance required for the entire 90-minute duration. There is no additional charge for the CEs. Application forms and other required CE materials will be available to participants by the Academy of Therapy Wisdom.
