Course Details
Linda Thai LMSW(she, her) is a trauma therapist who specializes in cutting-edge brain and body-based
modalities for the healing of complex developmental trauma. As an educator and consultant, she is gifted with the capacity to contextualize, synthesize, and communicate complex and nuanced issues pertaining to the impact of oppressive systems upon identity, mental health and wellbeing, and the invisibilized wounds of racial trauma. Linda is passionate about breaking the cycle of historical and intergenerational trauma at the individual and community levels and deeply believes in the healing power of coming together in community to grieve.
Born in Vietnam, raised in Australia, and now living in Alaska, Linda is a former child refugee who is not only redefining what it means to be Vietnamese, to be Australian, and to be a United States-ian….she is redefining what it means to be wounded and whole and a healer.
Content Description:
Participants in these sessions will enhance their understanding of attachment theory by exploring broader perspectives that extend beyond traditional parent-infant bonds. This will promote professional growth in clinical practice, equipping attendees with the tools to recognize and address the diverse factors influencing attachment, including systemic insecurities and cultural contexts. By integrating insights on collective nervous systems, ancestral connections, and embodied practices, clinicians will develop greater clinical skills to foster resilience and healing in their clients. Ultimately, this holistic approach will enhance their capacity to create supportive therapeutic environments that honor the complexity of individual and collective experiences.

Live Online Zoom Session 1: Historical Perspectives – Friday, November 15th – 9-10:30am PST/12pm-1:30pm EST/5-6:30pm GMT – 1.5 CEs
Session Overview:
In this session, Linda will explore a transformative shift in understanding attachment by moving beyond the traditional focus on the caregiver-infant relationship to embrace a broader perspective that considers systemic considerations.
While utilizing key concepts from Attachment Theory, she will consider how individuals develop identity coherence when society’s institutions and systems offer inconsistent and insecure messaging and actions towards those who inhabit certain identities e.g. racialized, disabled, 2SLGBTQIA+ identities.
This session will confront issues of colonization, systemic insecurities, and the impact of destabilization on democracy and civil unrest upon us all, advocating for an expanded conceptualization of secure attachment that includes nature, ancestors, culture, bodies, and cosmology as essential elements in the healing process.

Session Overview:In this session we will explore – through practical experiential activities – an expanded conceptualization of secure attachment beyond the infant-caregiver bond that better encompasses our needs as whole humans, engages the full web of relationships anchoring our lives, and helps break the cycle of historical and intergenerational trauma at the ecosystems level. Session Agenda:
– Introduction: Overview of session goals and speaker introduction (5 mins)
– Complex and ambiguous grief (5 mins)
– Guided experiential to connect to larger conceptualization of place (10 mins)
– Secure attachment with nature: Explanation, exploration and one guided experiential (10 mins)
-Secure Attachment with Ancestors: Examining the healing potential of bloodline, professional, and spiritual ties and one guided experiential (10 mins)
-Secure Attachment with Culture: Exploring how all rituals combine song, story, movement, and silence, as well as the reclamation of language and food as cultural elements (15 mins)
– Secure Attachment with Embodiment: Understanding the importance of touch, movement, rest, play and pleasure for bodily well-being, as well as the ways in which disembodied has been a necessary survival mechanism (10 mins)

Learning Objectives
Session 1: Historical Perspectives
- Describe the legacy of colonialism upon the modern world, and how that impacts the coherence of identity formation (a key concept in traditional attachment theory)
- Explain the concept of secure attachment/insecure attachment beyond the parent-infant dyad to examine relationality with societal systems and institutions
- Identify two symptoms of marginalized identity trauma that can be misdiagnosed as attachment trauma
Session 2: Expanded View of Attachment
- Explain expansive culturally-resourcing conceptualizations of secure attachment that can be lateralized out to multiple populations e.g. LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse individuals, BIPOC clients
- Describe at least two interventions for each gateway of expanded secure attachment
- Describe three expressions of ambiguous grief
For intermediate mental health professionals including Psychologists, Social Workers, LPCs, and LMFTs.
Continuing Education
This program offers limited Live CEs/Contact Hours.
Continuing education credit/Contact hours are awarded on a per-session basis, with full attendance required for the entire 90-minute duration. There is no additional charge for the CEs. Application forms and other required CE materials will be available to participants by the Academy of Therapy Wisdom.
NOTE: To receive continuing education credit, applicants must complete all CE materials, comply with attendance regulations, and submit an evaluation form for the session attended. It is the responsibility of the attendee to determine if CE credit/contact hours offered by Academy of Therapy Wisdom meet the regulations of their state licensing/certification board.
Psychology: This course does NOT provide CEs for Psychologists.
