Session 1: Essential Skills for Therapy With Adult Survivors of Sexual Trauma – Focus on Adult Survivors of Recent Acts of Sexual Violence (Part 1)
This session will explore the first five traits of resilience and how they can be nurtured in clients with trauma. We will cover each trait in depth, with practical exercises and strategies to develop these traits.
Education Goals:
- Enhance understanding of the first five key traits that contribute to resilience in individuals.
- Improve clinical skills in identifying and nurturing these resilience traits in clients with trauma.
- Foster professional growth by integrating resilience-building strategies into therapeutic practice.
Session 2: Top 10 Traits of Resilience (Part 2)
This session will explore the remaining five traits of resilience and how they can be nurtured in clients with trauma. We will cover each trait in depth, with practical exercises and strategies to develop these traits.
- Deepen understanding of the remaining five key traits that contribute to resilience in individuals.
- Improve clinical skills in identifying and nurturing these resilience traits in clients with trauma.
- Foster professional growth by integrating resilience-building strategies into therapeutic practice.

Live Online Zoom Session 1: Essential Skills for Therapy With Adult Survivors of Sexual Trauma – Focus on Adult Survivors of Recent Acts of Sexual Violence– Friday, Sept 13, 2024 – 9-10:30am PDT/11pm-1:30pm EDT – 1.5 hours – 1.5 CEs
Overview: This session will explore definitions relevant to understanding sexual trauma, common reactions, therapist attitudes & beliefs and their impact, and time for Q&A.
Agenda:
- Introduction to presenter and background in the fields of trauma and sexual violence (5 minutes)
- Definition of sexual violence, prevalence, context of patriarchy, dynamics of sexual violence (30 minutes)
- Common reactions following experiences of sexual violence, acute symptoms, barriers to reporting sexual violence (15 minutes)
- Therapist attitudes and beliefs about sexual violence, importance of starting by believing, facts and resources related to reporting, consent, brief overview of effective methods of therapy with survivors of recent sexual trauma (25 minutes)
- Discussion/Q and A with participants (15 minutes)
Live Online Zoom Session 2: Essential Skills for Therapy With Adult Survivors of Sexual Trauma – Focus on Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (Part 2)– Friday, September 20, 2024 – 9-10:30am PDT/11pm-1:30pm EDT – 1.5 hours – 1.5 CEs
Overview: This session will explore types of sexual abuse, common reactions/impacts including the role of dissociation, an overview of diagnosis & treatment of developmental trauma, and time for Q&A.
Agenda:

- Types of childhood sexual abuse, prevalence, statistics, context of patriarchy, common dynamics related to childhood sexual abuse (30 minutes)
- Common reactions of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, common expressions of childhood sexual abuse trauma in adulthood, common characteristics of families related to sexual abuse, the role of dissociation in surviving childhood sexual abuse (30 minutes)
- Understanding the developmental impact of sexual abuse trauma, learning the impact of betrayal trauma as a form of complex PTSD. Brief overview of effective treatment options for developmental trauma. (15 minutes)
- Discussion/Q and A with participants (15 minutes)

Learning Objectives
Session 1: Essential Skills for Therapy With Adult Survivors of Sexual Trauma – Focus on Adult Survivors of Recent Acts of Sexual Violence (Part 1)
- Participants will be able to name three common trauma reactions exhibited by adult survivors of sexual violence.
- Participants will be able to identify and address at least two barriers to effective therapy with survivors of sexual violence.
Session 2: Essential Skills for Therapy With Adult Survivors of Sexual Trauma – Focus on Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (Part 2)
- Participants will be able to identify three common trauma reactions exhibited by adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
- Participants will be able to name two legal options available to survivors following incidents of sexual violence and describe the therapist’s role in presenting this information.
- Participants will be able to name two types of therapeutic treatment which are effective with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
For intermediate mental health professionals including Psychologists, Social Workers, LPCs, and LMFTs.
Continuing Education
This program offers limited Live CEs/Contact Hours.
Continuing education credit/Contact hours are awarded on a per-session basis, with full attendance required for the entire 90-minute duration. There is no additional charge for the CEs. Application forms and other required CE materials will be available to participants by the Academy of Therapy Wisdom.
NOTE: To receive continuing education credit, applicants must complete all CE materials, comply with attendance regulations, and submit an evaluation form for the session attended. It is the responsibility of the attendee to determine if CE credit/contact hours offered by Academy of Therapy Wisdom meet the regulations of their state licensing/certification board.
Psychology: This course does NOT provide CEs for Psychologists.
